FIRM PROFILE

Since its founding in 1992, LGLA has been responsible for the planning and design of a wide range of public and private projects including campuses, schools, healthcare facilities, boutique hotels and many private gardens.

 

Founding principal Lisa Gimmy’s passion for design history led to LGLA’s selection to renovate landscapes for modernist homes by Carl Maston, Richard Neutra, Rob Quigley, and Eugen Kinn Choy, and to the creation of a courtyard garden for an 18th century building in Antigua, Guatemala. LGLA helmed the landscape restoration of the landmark Hindry House and recently completed the renovation of the landscape for a 1910 Sylvanus Marston Craftsman home, both in the Prospect Park neighborhood of Pasadena, California.

 

LGLA collaborated with Kelly Sutherlin McLeod Architecture on the renovation of the historic Pitzer College President’s House in Claremont, the city’s first LEED certified single-family residence, and on the historic Bungalow Court Relocation at Caltech. LGLA is currently developing the landscape for the Helms Hall of Fame in the historic Helms Bakery district.

 

The firm’s campus work includes master plans, prepared in collaboration with Berliner Architects, for Pierce College and Valley College, and built projects including the Valley College Main Quadrangle, Valley College Arts Courtyard, Valley College Transit Connector, and the Pierce College Mall and Transit Connector. Healthcare planning projects with Zakian Woo Architects include a 13-acre expansion of the Ararat Home of Los Angeles in Mission Hills – which will provide independent senior living, skilled nursing, and long-term care facilities – and the addition of a Skilled Nursing Facility to the Barlow Respiratory Hospital in Los Angeles.

 

Lisa Gimmy has long promoted sustainable and regionally appropriate solutions to projects regardless of complexity or scale. Designs evolve from a respect for cultural and historical contexts and reflect the qualities of the site and client goals. Over thirty years of experience building landscapes throughout California provides LGLA with a keen understanding of history, character, and materials appropriate to each region.

 

From the beginning of program development through the detailing of materials, LGLA engages with our clients to understand the possibilities appropriate to their project and to help them to evaluate these options against budget and schedule parameters. At the heart of any design process is the reconciliation of competing goals and objectives. In achieving the balance, we craft creative and innovative solutions that enable us to realize our core mission: to create landscapes imbued with beauty, utility, and a strong sense of place.
